Learning to Read
Here at Eastfield children are introduced to reading through the engaging characters of Kipper, Biff, Chip, Mum and Dad and their loveable dog, Floppy.
The stories are interesting and engaging and the books progressively develop children’s reading and decoding skills through story context and phonics. A phonic strand at each stage supports the work done through ‘Letters and sounds’.
Later on, the range of scripts broadens to give children experience of a variety of genre including poetry and information books. The Ort books are supplemented by books from other schemes and current popular fiction and non fiction texts that the children can choose and enjoy for themselves.
Children are encouraged to read to a grown-up daily and rewarded for their progress.
Oxford Owl Reading has 250 free eBooks for you to share with your child as well as simple ideas, tips, activities and games to help your child with their reading at home
Phonics is taught daily and systematically throughout the school and follows the structure of ‘Letters and Sounds’.
